Though I have worked on Linux servers for years. and this is my preferred, and while I own a Mac, I have mostly done my work on a windows machine. When Vista came out I knew I was not going to go there. and while Mac is a popular choice for musicians and artist, I chose to go with Linux. why? well for many reason and the top one is that, Linux and the open source community are the agents of change. they are actively working on and demonstrating a world based on cooperative interactive exploration and expansion of the human potential; free of the G word. Thats Greed. All that is asked is to honor the ancestors of a creation. and support the mission of continued evolution without limitation or hesitation. Commercial software is driven by greed and hype. Open source is driven by community support.
Having said all that. Back in my windows days I used an app that let me set up a virtual apache' server so I could work on my Joomla sites. it was good.
Today I work live and play in Linux. and if I need a windows app I either run a virtual of windows inside of linux or I use whine which is kind of a windows emulator of sorts. when windows goes stupid. I toss it and copy over the backup and I'm back in business.
The best part for me is I don't have to worry (to much) about virus attacks and malware. a sturdy firewall and I'm good to go.
Now to the point of my story today. I'm setting up a Localhost server on my computer. this will be just like what I use at my hosting company to serve up my sites. But I can test and try before going live.
so how to do this. I shall refer to this article that I found online. Oh, and thats another thing. the linux community is way supportive.
so here are links to 2 article on installing a LAMP sever in ubuntu Linux. Lamp stands for LInux Apache MySQL PHP.
