Installing Windows after Linux is already present on your system will undoubtedly remove GRUB (GRand Unified Bootloader) from the hard drive's MBR (Master Boot Record). This makes it difficult to boot into Linux because you're never given a choice; Windows will boot automatically every time your system starts. Whether you've removed Windows since, or simply want to use both of your operating systems, you'll need to reinstall GRUB.

Instructions
Things You'll Need
- Live Linux distribution disk
-
- 1
Boot your system from a Linux live CD or DVD. The flavor of Linux is (usually) irrelevant, however, use live media that matches your distribution if possible. If you've lost your copy, visit the website of your particular Linux distribution; it will have various live media downloads.
- 2
Log in as root.
- 3
Open an instance of "Terminal" (if you're not already in command line) and enter the command "sudo grub". This will switch you over to the GRUB shell.
- 4
Type
find /boot/grub/stage1
and press "Enter". This will return a location that looks similar to "(hd0,0)" depending on where the GRUB setup files are located. You may get more than one result if you had multiple installations of GRUB.
- 5
Type
root (hd0,0)
and press "Enter". If your installation was elsewhere, change the numbers accordingly.
- 6
Type
setup (hd0)
and press "Enter". You are designating which hard drive MBR GRUB will be installed on. So if your installation earlier was on (hd1,1), you would use "(hd1)" instead.
If you want to install GRUB to the boot sector of a partition (instead of the MBR) specify the partition in the above command. For example, you would use "(hd0,0)" if you wanted to install GRUB to the first partition of the first hard disk.
Once setup finishes the system will reboot. Remove the live media so it doesn't boot from it again.
